Statistics between inductive logic and empirical science
نویسنده
چکیده
Inductive logic generalizes the idea of logical entailment and provides standards for the evaluation of non-conclusive arguments. A main application of inductive logic is the generalization of observational data to theoretical models. In the empirical sciences, the mathematical theory of statistics addresses the same problem. This paper argues that there is no separable purely logical aspect of statistical inference in a variety of complex problems. Instead, statistical practice is often motivated by decision-theoretic considerations and resembles empirical science. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Inductive Logic and Statistics
There are strong parallels between statistics and inductive logic. An inductive logic is a system of inference that describes the relation between propositions on data, and propositions that extend beyond the data, such as predictions over future data, and general conclusions on data. Statistics, on the other hand, is a mathematical discipline that describes procedures for deriving results abou...
متن کاملStatistics as Inductive Inference
This chapter concerns the relation between statistics and inductive logic. I start by describing induction in formal terms, and I introduce a general notion of probabilistic inductive inference. This provides a setting in which statistical procedures and inductive logics can be captured. Specifically, I discuss three statistical procedures (hypotheses testing, parameter estimation, and Bayesian...
متن کاملLearning Complex Mappings between Ontologies
In this paper, we introduce a new approach for constructing complex mappings between ontologies by transforming it to a rule learning process. Derived from the classical Inductive Logic Programming, our approach uses instance mappings as training data and employs tailoring heuristics to improve the learning efficiency. Empirical evaluation shows that our generated Horn-rule mappings are meaning...
متن کاملAn application of Carnapian inductive logic to an argument in the philosophy of statistics
I claim that an argument from the philosophy of statistics can be improved by using Carnapian inductive logic. \citet{GelmanShalizi2012} criticise a philosophical account of how statisticians ought to choose statistical models which they call `the received view of Bayesian inference' and propose a different account inspired by falsificationist philosophy of science. I introduce another philosop...
متن کاملModifying Logic of Discovery for Dealing with Domain Knowledge in Data Mining
Logic of discovery was developed in 1970’s as an answer to questions ”Can computers formulate and justify scientific hypotheses?” and ”Can they comprehend empirical data and process it rationally, using the apparatus of modern mathematical logic and statistics to try to produce a rational image of the observed empirical world?”. Logic of discovery is based on observational and theoretical langu...
